Storying the Self: A Symposium

deadline for submissions:
December 12, 2016
full name / name of organization:
University of Brighton

29 March 2017

This one-day event seeks to explore how the self is represented, reimagined and reconfigured in a range of practices across the arts, humanities and social sciences. We seek to engage academics, writers and artists as researchers of their own and/or others’ practices in ideas related to narratives of the self. We also welcome contributions that explore the articulation of self in relation to teaching and research in Higher Education.

What are the ways that artists draw on notions of the self as inspiration for writing and other visual arts based practices? In education, how might ‘storying the self’ be incorporated into a more embodied pedagogic practice? How might we engage students in notions of the self as part of their studies and support them to make connections between the self and the changing world?

We seek contributors to present their work as 20 minute papers or who wish to disseminate their work in exhibition spaces, performance or workshop settings. Academic papers, arts-based projects and creative work are invited to explore themes of (but not restricted to):

  • Practices of storying the self
  • Documentary
  • Auto-fiction
  • Auto-ethnography
  • Self as subject-matter
  • Autobiography
  • Memoir
