Hi,

I am seeking essays in English to include in a volume tentatively entitled "The Spaces and Places of Horror," to be published by Vernon Press.

This volume aims to explore the complex, layered horizon of landscapes in horror film culture to unpack the use that the horror genre makes of settings, locations, spaces, and places, be they physical, imagined, or altogether imaginary. Different theoretical frameworks are welcome, and relevant comparative studies among American, European, and/or non-Western cinema are strongly encouraged.

We are living through a decade of centenaries as we remember or reimagine the cataclysmic events of a century ago which helped to shape the modern world – the Great War, the Easter Rising, the Bolshevik Revolution. Each year provides an opportunity to reflect on the nature and problematics of commemoration. This conference provides a venue to explore the relationship between remembering and writing, and to consider connections between personal, collective and national memories. Participants will explore the theme of “remembering” in its widest sense, from personal memories in diaries and oral histories, to collective memory housed in public records or embodied in history, literature, folklore, and mythology. Graduate students welcome.

Spirituality and Social Justice

April 5, 2017

Allen University, Columbia, SC

The music, language, dance, art, and fashion that constitute hip-hop culture have often been celebrated as a means for giving voice to marginalized people in the US and around the world. Hip hop, in short, is often conceived as a potential vehicle for achieving social justice in a world riven by racism, sexism, classism and other forms of oppression. It is perhaps just as frequently condemned for perpetuating dysfunctional values and harmful stereotypes that impede efforts to achieve a more just and equitable society.
