Event Type: Academic Conference, 11-13 September, 2017
Location: University of Nottingham, Nottingham, UK
Organiser: Dr Nathan Waddell, University of Nottingham
Proposals are invited for 20-minute presentations on any aspect of the paintings; writings; artistic, social, and philosophical networks; and life of the British modernist Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957). Presentations on subjects foregrounding Lewis’s socio-political, cultural, and philosophical writings are encouraged, as are papers relating Lewis to his contemporaries and to figures from other time periods. Undergraduate and postgraduate students are especially urged to participate. The goal of the conference is to facilitate discussions in which all of Lewis’s activities as a painter, writer, aesthetic and political theorist, cultural critic, and futurologist can be brought into dialogue. ‘Benign Fiesta’ will celebrate the 60th anniversary of Lewis’s death by hosting:
- an editing symposium with presentations from scholars working on the Complete Critical Edition of Lewis’s writings (commissioned by Oxford University Press);
- a traditional academic conference featuring 20-minute research presentations based on proposals submitted in response to this CFP;
- keynote presentations from Professor Douglas Mao (Johns Hopkins University), Dr Ann-Marie Einhaus (Northumbria University), and Dr Richard Slocombe (Imperial War Museums).
Please send 250-word proposals to Nathan Waddell by 31 March 2017. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by 30 April 2017. Registration fees and accommodation fees will be confirmed as soon as possible after this date. Website: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/research/groups/crlc/events/lewisfiesta.aspx
