A National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute for College and University Teachers: Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia: The Voices of Women in Literature, Cinema and Other Arts since Independence is a three-week program to be held June 26 – July 14, 2017 at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon.

The goal of the institute is to center the artistic voices of women—voices that have been largely eclipsed from both popular culture and political discourse in the Maghreb. Visiting scholars will examine the works of North African women artists since the 1960s, principally in the fields of cinema, painting, literature, popular song and photography. During the three weeks, faculty and participants will approach the themes of nationalism, exile and revival since independence using salient examples in literature, cinema, photography, painting and popular music, with the understanding that overlap between these forms is inherent to modern art and has increased with recent technology. Participants will have the opportunity to consult individually with the institute faculty, work on curriculum projects, and conduct research at the OSU Valley Library. A number of planned events, sponsored by Oregon State University, will be coordinated to highlight institute themes and North African culture.
