Presenters should feel free to propose papers on a wide-range of topics. We are especially interested, however, in papers that explore the representation of trauma and/or violence as a necessary part of socially transformative practices. Proposed papers could consider, for instance, the trauma of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’s terrigenesis or how Luke Cage’s body—often riddled with bullets—offers a challenge to the “All Lives Matter” movement.

[A]nd so I left my fairy godmother, with both her hands on her crutch stick, standing in the midst of the dimly lighted room beside the rotten bride-cake that was hidden in cobwebs” (Great Expectations, 158).

The upcoming issue of Parlour will concentrate on food and consumption culture with an emphasis on the displeasing aspects of appetites: hunger, starvation, gluttony, and pica to name a few. We invite submissions that explore a wide range of approaches to the issue’s theme and the various ways consumption or depravation becomes a “haunting” and “horrible” aspect of humanity.

deadline for submissions:
Tuesday, January 31, 2017

Figuring Race: Special issue of The Comparatist

updated:
Tuesday, March 14, 2017 - 4:50pm
Zahi Zalloua / The Comparatist
deadline for submissions:
Saturday, April 1, 2017

Call for Papers: Special Issue, The Comparatist
Topic: Figuring Race
General Editor: Zahi Zalloua (Whitman College)

We welcome contributions that examine the notion of race in comparative studies and literary theory. How do we imagine, represent, and construct race today? What role does race play in the Humanities? How do we talk about race in an ideologically color blind society? How does racial difference relate to other type of differences? Can we foreground race while avoiding both the pitfalls of identity politics and the depoliticization of race by neoliberalism? Topics of interest could include:

Black Lives Matter

Critical Race Theory

Solidarity Movements

Intersectionality

Cosmopolitanism
