Speculative fiction covers a broad range of narrative styles and genres. The cohesive element that pulls works together under this category is that there is some “unrealistic” element. Whether it’s magical, supernatural, or even a futuristic technological development, works that fall in this category stray from conventional realism in some way. For this reason, speculative fiction can be quite broad, including everything from fantasy and magical realism to horror and science fiction—from Gabriel Garcia Marquez to H. P.
Intermezzo, a digital longform publication - http://intermezzo.enculturation.net/ - seeks submissions that explore the role of dads in academic or scholarly writing.
Dad bods. Father knows best. Cats in the Cradle. Father of the Bride. The embarrassing dad. The absent father. There is no shortage of clichés, stereotypes, cultural representations, tropes, and ideas about dads. There is not, however, a significant body of academic writing on dads.

DEADLINE EXTENDED: Space and place in Neo-Victorian Literature and Culture
Keynote Speaker: Dr Marie-Luise Kohlke (Swansea University)
Friday June 23, 2017, Lancaster University
This conference responds to the genre of neo-Victorianism from the perspective of space and place. It aims to probe how a focus on space and place can enhance our understanding of the contemporary engagement with the Victorian past.
The crisis and collapse of Marxism as the dominant paradigm of left intellectual thought undoubtedly remains one of the most seismic shifts in the ideological history of the late twentieth century. With the collapse of actually existing socialism in the Soviet Union, the pressure of postmodern concepts, and the rise of new social protest movements in the spheres of race, gender, and sexual orientation, Marxism came to appear the ‘signifier par excellence of theoretical hubris, redundancy and error’ (Pendakis and Szeman, 2014). In the twenty-first century however, precipitated by the succession of economic and ecological crisis scenarios, Marxist criticism has experienced a critical resurgence.

III INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE IN TRANSATLANTIC STUDIES
May 12th-13th 2017
Real Colegio Complutense at Harvard (Cambridge, MA)
Transatlantic culture often presents itself as a narrative of encounter and dialogue that transcend the limits of the local. However, the trace of colonialism, the living memory of exile, and an uneven distribution of economic, political, and symbolic power haunts transatlantic imagination. This conference aims to explore the many ways in which antagonisms, uneasy pluralism, and tense negotiations of difference overdetermine sites of Transatlantic cultural practices.
