This panel seeks to build on the resurgence of interest in the work of Anglo-Mexican surrealist writer and painter Leonora Carrington inaugurated at her death in 2011 at age 94, and continuing through major career retrospectives in Dublin (2013) and Liverpool (2015). For many years, criticism on her writings has been held up by the relative unavailability of her works. Forthcoming centennial reissues of her complete stories (Dorothy Project) as well as her memoir, Down Below (NYRB Classics), however, offer the chance to resituate her work within recent scholarly work on modernism, surrealism, transnationalism, cosmopolitanism, gender studies and sexuality, trauma studies and neurodiversity, translation studies, and more.

What was the attitude towards genius in an age that produced a great number of polymaths?  Is ingenium strictly a natural disposition, innate quality, talent or temperament? Or to what extent must this natural quality be formed through a process of education, including self-education? Papers are invited for a special session at the Neo-Latin Congress at Albacete, Spain, 29 July - 3, August 2018, that focus on a single subject who worked in Latin in the period. The theme of the congress is Humanity & Nature: Arts & Sciences in Neo-Latin Literature. Please send your abstract of 150-200 words as a Word attachment, including your name, institutional affiliation (if any), address, email, and telephone number.

In recognition of this year’s conference theme, “Artists and Activists,” we welcome papers that explore issues in children’s and young adult literature broadly, but especially invite those that explore the ways that writers of literature for young people have addressed issues of politics, advocacy, and social justice. In our conversations, we hope to think about the place of literature and activism in the lives of young people. 

Topics could include, but are by no means limited to:
