ATHE Performance Studies Focus Group Pre-Conference
CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Performance Studies Focus Group
Association for Theatre in Higher Education
August 2nd and 3rd, 2017
Las Vegas, Nevada
SPECTACLE
The ATHE Performance Studies Focus Group calls for papers for its upcoming pre-conference. Papers should address the broad theme of “Spectacle” through the lens of performance studies and the ongoing themes and debates in the and across the field. Rebecca Schneider will be the keynote speaker for the pre-conference and will frame our conversations with a talk entitled: “Among, Beside, and With: Alternatives to Binarizing Geometries of Spectacle.” The pre-conference will also feature a plenary panel consisting of papers that specifically address spectacle at the intersections of gender, sexuality, race, and class in Las Vegas or Las Vegas-like settings. All other accepted proposals will be grouped into working groups that will circulate papers prior to the pre-conference and meet in person during a working group session. Plenary speakers will each speak for twenty minutes. Working group papers should be no more than ten pages. We welcome research that takes a variety of forms--written and performative.
In conjunction with the main PSFG conference call and the keynote topic, we invite proposals on any aspect of performance studies and spectacle such as
Spectacular geographies
Spectacular bodies
Spectacular politics
Spectacle and labor
Spectacle and consumption
Spectacle and environment
We seek to inhabit the pre-conference with a diverse cross section of established and emerging performance studies scholars and practitioners. Proposals should consist of abstracts of up to 250 words and bios of up to 150 words. Please indicate if you would like to be considered for the plenary sessions when applying. The pre-conference will take place all day on Wednesday, August 2nd and in the morning on Thursday, August 3rd.
Submit proposals by April 30th to pre-conference organizers: Michelle Liu Carriger (michelle.liu.carriger at gmail.com) and Eero Laine (eero.email at gmail.com)
