Call for Papers

For a special issue of Shakespeare: A Journal marking the 200th anniversary of the birth of Karl Marx, we are inviting submissions of papers related to the issue's central topic of investigating Marx's impact, in a broad sense, on Shakespeare studies, either by exemplifying it in your own way or by commenting directly on it. Reference to the situation in our contemporary world as part of the overall argument would be welcome as well. We are also looking for papers that investigate Shakespeare’s influence on Karl Marx and the development of his writings.

The proposed length for this is 6000 words, and the journal requires double-blind peer evaluation. We expect a strong issue.

The second issue of América Crítica (December 2017) will include a section on “American cities and the city in America”, edited by Javier González Díez (University of Turin) and Fiorenzo Iuliano (University of Cagliari).

Repasting the Elegy: Public Mourning

For this panel, we seek poets working in the elegy form. More specifically, we seek works of contemporary elegy that challenge the foundational components of the historic elegy. The panel will explore the use of the elegy as praxis for protest, whether by vocalizing unheard voices or advocating social justice issues.  How do you mediate between personal and public lamentations as a form of protest? How do you challenge the historical foundations of the elegy to account for recent political events and personal reactions to them?

The international conference on the gender of sovereignty in European politics and aesthetics, organized in Leuven, Belgium (18 - 20 December 2017) wants to bring together investigations that revisit issues of gender and sovereignty from a variety of disciplines. The historical scope of the conference ranges from the beginnings of modernity to the present. We invite papers that address imaginations of sovereignty in political and cultural discourse either through case-studies or in comprehensive analyses envisioning a modified history. Along with being enthralled with characters and storylines, fans find themselves listening to soundtracks and following their favorite actors to other Korean dramas.
