Both elusive and tempting, lying is a mode of communicate and influence others’ beliefs and behaviours which reveals itself in a wide range of forms: imagination, creation, invention, artifice, (dis)simulation, omission, pretence, change, disfiguration, deception, forgery, manipulation, etc.

Money, Power and Print: An Interdisciplinary Colloquium on the Financial Revolution

This colloquium, the eighth in a biennial series and the first to be held in Germany, invites scholars from a variety of disciplines to enrich their mutual understanding of the intersections between public finance, politics, and print during a period some scholars call the ‘financial revolution’ from around 1688 to 1776. Papers for the colloquium should be grounded in one of the four general areas that address the themes below by considering the following:

The Creative Writing: Prose panel will discuss emerging brief prose forms, which may include prose poems, micro or flash fiction, flash creative nonfiction, excerpts from flash sequences, and hybrid or blended short prose pieces.  Panelists will offer a brief statement defining the type of brief fiction s/he is writing, then read examples from their work by way of illustration.  The intention is for this panel to be informative to those attendees new to brief prose, while concurrently being interesting and enjoyable for readers familiar to brief prose.  Questions and a lively discussion to follow.

The Cormac McCarthy Society invites paper proposals for its Fall 2017 Conference, to be held Sept. 1-3 in Austin, Texas. Based on the new, exciting Nautilus essay, we have decided to extend the submission deadline to April 30, 2017.

Papers on all topics relating to the works of Cormac McCarthy, from all perspectives, are invited, including considerations of theatrical productions or film adaptations of his work, pedagogical approaches, and the relationship of McCarthy’s work to other authors or artists.

Teaching writing has always existed in the intersection of artistry and activism. Writing instructors encourage their students to attend to style, voice, and other aesthetic elements of their text. Writing instructors also encourage their students to think of their work as socially situated and able to effect change in the “real world” outside of the classroom.
The Teaching Writing in College section welcomes all submissions but is particularly interested in those that consider writing instruction in relation to artistry and activism. Possible topics include but are not limited:
