One of the standard maxims of counter-terrorism is that the terrorist's greatest fear is not to be defeated but rather to be ignored. Indeed, terror has always been a communicative tool, and modern terrorism has developed in relation to dual advances in technologies of violence and communication. Nevertheless, the terrorist's quest for attention and visibility is always balanced with a necessary operational concern for invisibility. Clandestine planning activities are interspersed with dramatic and conspicuous outbursts of violence before the terrorist disappears once again into shadows of the underworld.

The goal of this panel is to explore the dynamic tension that exists between visibility and invisibility in the realm of terrorism, in both the rhetorical and operational sense. This session will include papers on representations of terrorism in literature, journalism, historiography, and other media. Presentations on thematics of visibility in terrorism are especially welcome.

Individual paper presentations will be between 15 and 20 minutes long. Please submit proposals via the online system by May 21, 2017. The PAMLA 2017 Conference will be held at the lovely Chaminade University of Honolulu (with the official conference hotel being the Ala Moana) from Friday, November 10 to Sunday, November 12.
