This special session for SAMLA 89 (to be held in Atlanta, Nov. 2-5)  will explore how texts that invite laughter represent and renegotiate power. In the spirit of the SAMLA 89 theme, “High Art/Low Art: Borders and Boundaries in Popular Culture,” papers may explore how satirical, parodic, absurd, or otherwise comic texts occupy those borderlands between high and low art, literary and popular, critique and escape. We welcome abstracts on topics ranging from the early modern period to the present day, including broader theoretical considerations of humor and power in literature as well as treatments of individual texts. By June 2, please submit a 250-word abstract and a CV or brief bio to Kelly Malone (University of the South) at kamalone@sewanee.edu
