On Dramatic Theory

As performance theory looms over the work of theatre studies, how might we define or distinguish dramatic theory? What possibilities emerge for dramatic theory through attention to actual theatrical practice, both historical and contemporary? Rather than “applying” theory or fitting theatre into existing theoretical frameworks, this special section examines the ways that theatre offers itself as a site of theoretical intervention. For some contributors, this may be an opportunity to look at historical theorists whose ideas might be updated, expanded, or re-embraced, while others will develop new dramatic theories rooted in theatrical performance and dramatic literature. We also welcome contributions that offer a broader view of the field of theatre studies and its history, tracing trajectories of theatrical theory through time and across geographies. Finally, given the longstanding connection between the sociology of culture and theatre, as well as the notion of theatre as social practice, articles in this special section should consider the possibilities (and pitfalls) of using dramatic theory as a form of cultural or political theory.

The special section will consist of shorter essays meant to provide a broad collection of approaches to dramatic theory as it is understood today. Please submit an abstract of no more than 300 words by July 1st, 2017. Completed articles should be 3000 to 4500 words and will be due in fall 2017. The special section is slated for publication in Spring 2018. Inquiries are welcome. All correspondence and proposals should be directed to Dr. Eero Laine at eerolain@buffalo.edu.
