Movement as Immobility - A Conference on Film and Christianity

updated:
Tuesday, May 30, 2017 - 4:52pm
Centre for Comparative Studies - University of Lisbon
deadline for submissions:
Friday, June 30, 2017

In Simone Weil’s “First and Last Notebooks” we find a note that describes the sea as “a movement within immobility,” the “Image of primal matter”, which leads this Christian philosopher to see music also as a movement that “takes possession of all our soul—and this movement is nothing but immobility”. Perhaps this is an even more fitting description of film, with its images in motion. Its movements can reconnect us with the movements of the world, those motions in which a mysterious sense of order, what Weil calls immobility, arises.

ReFocus: The Films of Ousmane Sembène

updated:

Sérgio Dias Branco
deadline for submissions:
Tuesday, August 1, 2017

Senegalese Ousmane Sembène was one of the most important African artists of the 20th century as a writer and a film director. Yet there are only a handful of studies on his cinematic body of work. They usually adopt the same structure: the analysis of his films in chronological order. This essay collection tackles his work and legacy in a deeper way. Sembène articulated his observations in fiction films instead of documentaries, embracing the African tradition of telling and transmitting stories that creatively reflect the circumstances of a people. His films have strengthened the cause of liberation from colonial domination and other forms of oppression.

deadline for submissions:
Saturday, September 30, 2017

The proposal H.R. 861, a bill recently introduced to terminate the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, prompts us to address the directions of ecocritical discourse in order to attend to the current material-specific, aesthetic, and rhetorical renderings of changing landscapes on a warming planet. What kind of citizenry is possible in environments overflowing with toxic waste? How do fossil fuels shape the imaginaries of urban and rural ecologies? What are the limits and possibilities of forensic and material analyses to shed light on catastrophic degradations of the environment without recuperating or fabricating disgust?

This roundtable will examine teaching methods and strategies for addressing the fiction of terrorism in the contemporary literature classroom. With a focus on teaching after 9/11, and in a moment fraught with tensions about politics and secondary education (see, for example, the “Professor Watchlist”), this roundtable will also address the ways faculty can frame their classes—not only for the students they teach, but for a general public concerned with the politics of college and university faculty.
