Sound has always been there. However, its ephemeral condition has prevented us from critically listening to the past and even from thinking about our everyday sonic experiences. Moreover, the sonic materialization of the Logos —voice—  has been systematically relegated to a second level, even when orality was present in the production of any kind of text.

Victorian Sea Fiction: Unbounded Identities in a Bounded World

Last call! This panel aims to use the framework of oceanic studies to interrogate Victorian sea fiction. We welcome work on nineteenth-century writers across the Anglophone world, though could be open to works in other languages. We are particularly looking for works that do not fall into traditional nationalist canons of literature or works that epitomize transnational networks of culture, empire, and economics.

At the 2nd International Laurence Sterne Conference (26-28 October, Bydgoszcz, Poland) Dr Daniel Cook will be convening the panel "The Age of Sterne in the 21st century". The panel will concentrate on the uses and abuses of the Georgian period - especially, though not exclusively, the 1750s and 1760s (the "Sternean" decades) - in contemporary literature and popular culture.
