After the recent seventieth anniversary of the end of World War II and with new films centered on World War II emerging, the implications of these popular, contemporary representations in American culture seem pertinent to investigate. Several contemporary and popular films depict the sheer violence and implied heroism from this war: Saving Private Ryan (1998), Pearl Harbor (2001), the mini-series Band of Brothers (2001), Letters from Iwo Jima (2006), Defiance (2008), Valkyrie (2008)and The Monuments Men (2014).

The Arkansas Philological Association invites papers for its forty-fourth annual conference—“The Literary Lens: Craft, Technique, and Process in the Language Arts.” Papers exploring the modes and methods we use to create and interpret literature are particularly encouraged, though papers on related or alternative critical, creative, or pedagogical approaches to language, literature, creative writing, and rhetorical analysis are also welcome.

In her biography of Branwell Brontë, Daphne du Maurier described Branwell as ‘a spectre in the Brontë story, in pathetic contrast with the astonishing achievements of his sisters’. 2017 is Branwell’s bicentenary year, and Brontë Parsonage Museum is marking the occasion with a number of events and an exhibition curated by Simon Armitage, entitled Mansions in the Sky.
