#Resist: Protest and Resistance Media in Brexit Britain and Trump-era USA

Summary:

We invite papers that explore protest and resistance in relation to Brexit Britain and the Trump-era United States. We are interested in media created in response to these seismic periods of political change, media created in the period leading up to them, and media that more broadly deals with themes related to populism, politics, and power. As well as discussing media that can be seen as protest or resistance, this event will consider media forms that fail to resist, or those that merely hint at protest. In doing this we can also consider the responsibility of media creators to engage in and respond to political shifts and crises.

City Lights Posters invites submissions for its debut special anthology publication, devoted to a wide ranging and multi-layered assessment of Egyptian film posters from the 1930s to 1980s.

 Articles should be written in English or Arabic. Articles must be informative and intellectually stimulating, yet entertaining and highly readable to reach a wider audience.

 

Indicative list of appropriate subjects:

 1 - The history of Egyptian film posters: historical development of the craft of poster making, biographical accounts of distinguished poster artists, etc.

2 - Representations of gender, class, nation, ideology, or religion in posters.

Between 11 and 16 June 2018, the University of Antwerp’s Centre for Manuscript Genetics will host the 26th International James Joyce Symposium in the city that Joyce and his family visited in the summer of 1926. It lifts her out of a petty state of jealousy, soothing her loneliness and easing her disappointment. In the Houses of Healing in Minas Tirith, humans and hobbits find healing for both body and spirit, including recovery from trauma and heartbreak. We are looking for proposals for flash-paper presentations (up to 10 minutes each) that rigorously investigate either depictions of healing in literature (especially speculative fiction) or applications of literature to real-life recovery. What makes a joke right or wrong? When is it good or bad to laugh? The rights and wrongs of a joke can be expressed in political terms: a joke is politically incorrect or it exploits a marginalized group of people. Alternatively, a joke can be inappropriate or mean-spirited. A joke can make someone feel bad about their race, ethnicity, religion, socio-economic status, body, gender identity, and the list can go on and on. Laughter can hurt someone’s feelings, reveal that the laugher lacks manners, or maybe holds to racist, sexist, or other offensive views.
