DEADLINE EXTENDED - ATHE 2018 Religion and Theatre Emerging Scholars Panel

deadline for submissions:
March 19, 2018
full name / name of organization:
Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) - Religion and Theatre Focus Group

The Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) 2018 Conference

Boston, MA

August 1-5, 2018

The ATHE Religion and Theatre Focus Group invites current and recent graduate students (having graduated within the past 2-3 years) and/or independent scholars who have not yet presented at a major national conference to submit papers to its 2018 Emerging Scholars Panel. Papers should address how religion/spirituality and theatre correspond and interact, but “religion,” “spirituality,” and “theatre” can be conceived broadly. Essays may consider all aspects of spirituality, spiritual practice, religion as institution, and theology, as well as drama, performance, and performativity. We particularly encourage submissions that engage with notions of religion and theatre/performance as they relate to this year’s conference theme, “Theatres of Revolution: Performance, Pedagogy, and Protest.” In the spirit of the host city of Boston and its revolutionary history, papers might explore the history of and relationship between religion/spirituality, performance, and protest.

For this year’s Emerging Scholars Panel, we are pleased to continue our partnership with Ecumenica: Journal of Theatre and Performance, a peer-reviewed journal interested in scholarship that explores the relationship between spirituality, religion, and the arts, and which promotes positive dialogue about different faith traditions. With author consent, selected papers will be regarded as recommended submissions for a future issue of Ecumenica. Accepted papers will receive feedback from Ecumenica peer reviewers, and be considered for publication.Additionally, each accepted emerging scholar will receive $100 in travel funds from the Religion and Theatre focus group.

Possible topics may include (but are not limited to):

  • Performing religion/spirituality as a mode of revolution and/or protest.
  • Protest/revolution as a spiritual, religious, and/or liturgical performance.
  • The relationship between religion, spirituality, and politics in performance.
  • The phenomenology of revolution and protest.
  • Performing sacred texts in political spaces.
  • The effect of spiritual/religious performance on the physical body.

Submission Guidelines:

  • For this conference, the Religion and Theatre Focus Group will only be accepting completed conference papers for consideration. Papers should be approximately 8-10 pages in length.
  • Please include a cover page with your name, paper title, institutional affiliation, contact information, and a brief abstract (up to 250 words), but please remove your name from any other page of the essay, as submissions will go through a blind vetting process.
  • In the body of your submission email, please include a brief bio and any requests for AV equipment, if applicable. AV equipment may be requested, but is not guaranteed.
