Submissions are invited for a multidisciplinary symposium on Nineteenth-Century Time, which will take place at the University of Toronto on 9-10 March 2018. This event will be hosted by a working group of the Jackman Humanities Institute that is devoted to the study of time and temporal experience throughout the long nineteenth century, encompassing cross-disciplinary exploration of the cultures of thought, representation and performance of revolutionary time, neoteric time technologies, the rise of historicist consciousness, and new psychologist discourses of the subject in terms of time and memory. 

We welcome proposals for presentations of research in all areas of nineteenth-century time and temporality, from disciplines including but not limited to literatures, modern languages, music, art history/visual studies, theatre/performance studies, philosophy, film and cinema, and history, including histories of science and technology. We are especially interested in the following themes:

• Colonial time, the time of Empire
• notions of futurity
• clock time and times of day
• “lost” time and nostalgia
• being “out of time”: temporalities of sleep, dreams, the unconscious
• simultaneities

Please submit abstracts of 250-300 words for individual presentations of not longer than 20 minutes to ellen.lockhart@utoronto.ca, by 19 January 2018. Panel proposals of 500 words total, featuring brief descriptions of each presentation, will also be considered. Abstracts should be in PDF or .docx format, and should include the presenter’s name, institution, and discipline. Program decisions will be communicated by 26 January 2018.
