Children's Literature

November 9-11, 2018

This general session invites submissions on a wide range of topics relating to children’s literature, including novels, picture books, graphic novels, or theatrical performances intended for, or consumed by children. We are particularly interested in papers that engage with the special conference theme of “Acting, Roles, Stages.” As such, papers dealing with issues such as acting as art and metaphor, theories of role play and theatricality, and conceptions of the world stage and the public audience, in connection to the session’s topic of children's literature, are particularly welcome.

Possible topics could also include, but are not limited to: works that explore theater that is created for or performed by children, including those that address relevant question in the theory, history, and practice of children’s theater; the culture of childhood actors; the development of theater for children; translating novels to scripts; elements of stage craft for children; works of literature that specifically address acting and performance on the stage; Shakespeare adaptations for children; children’s nonfiction about acting, performance and theater; naturalist or anti-realist techniques of performance and stagecraft; the staging of everyday life; social roles and role play (e.g., Goffman’s “presentation of self in everyday life”); and performativity and technologies of mediation.

We are also interested in submissions regarding how culture is performed in works of children’s literature. Culture in this context, includes the performance of race, religion, sexuality, nationality, and gender.
