This panel will explore whether global city fiction is a viable category for global Anglophone fiction, and if so, whether the genre can facilitate revisions of dominant concepts in postcolonial or global studies.

Panel description:

When invited to speak in “the Personal and the Political Panel" as a respondent at the New York University Institute of Humanities conference, Audre Lorde begins with indicating the arrogance of feminist theory to assume that black, third world, queer women would have nothing to contribute to the white , non-queer, privileged, first world discussion. When she uttered her now famous – so famous that one can order a t-shirt , a mug, various paraphernalia with this sentence on it- master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house, Audre Lorde is standing in the most controversial of places and times, confronting the very master in their own house.

The Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA) has recently added Classics as a secondary area of inquiry under Comparative Literature.  Please consider submitting an abstract for a panel on Greco-Roman Myth in Literature and/or the Arts, which I will be chairing, for the 50th anniversary convention to be held in Washington DC March 21-24, 2019.

Since Classics is a new secondary area of inquiry for NeMLA, this session attempts to cast its net quite broadly. The intention is to appeal to classicists or others dealing with Greco-Roman literature, history, archaeology, and culture and its later reception for abstracts that will have wide appeal to the NeMLA audience.
