Call for Papers, “Mementos and the Nineteenth-Century Marriage Plot” for “Monuments and Memory,” INCS 2019 (March 21-24, 2019 in Dallas, TX)

Please submit a 250-word abstract by September 5, 2018 to Catherine J. Golden at and Melissa Rampelli at

In remembering the long nineteenth century, an era of production and consumption, we cannot underestimate the prevalence and power of possessions in service of plot and characterization in the nineteenth-century British novel.  How do mementos—e.g. jewelry, hair, portrait miniatures, and letters—that characters exchange, display, and treasure inform the marriage plot?  In turn, how does an attention to the material object impact our views on identity, self-perception, or social interactions as they relate to the marriage plot in nineteenth-century novels?  We welcome papers that examine the role of one telling object or a constellation of mementos in a well-chosen text.  Abstracts should be accompanied by a 2-page CV.
