Representing the Foreigner in Contemporary Cinema - SCMS 2019 Panel
American cinema has long been preoccupied with depictions of the foreigner, and mainstream films typically stage scenarios where the resolution to eject or assimilate the foreigner is celebrated as a moment of solidarity for Americans. Our panel will explore representations of the foreigner in contemporary American cinema, and we invite contributions that pay specific attention to films that address:
- Images of the foreigner in the immediate aftermath of 9/11
- Foreign terrorists/terrorism during the War in Afghanistan
- American responses to refugee crises around the globe
- The impact of the 2016 election and Donald Trump's presidency
