Anti-Oppressive Solidarities: 'Third World' Feminism's Leadership against Imperialism

updated:
Thursday, July 5, 2018 - 11:43am
50th NeMLA Anniversary Convention
deadline for submissions:
Sunday, September 30, 2018

This session will present work by scholars on the literature, movements, activism, and cultural production from the regions of Latin/South America, Africa, and Asia, which have, in a showcase of imperial language, been described as the “Third World” by those in the industrial West. This session topic is vital and timely as the Trump administration’s rhetoric toward Africa as having “shithole countries” and the United States’ history of colonization as “taming countries” calls upon us all to actively resist such violently colonial discourse with the narratives, stories, and experiences directly from the people of these areas.

Free Will and the Subjective Agency of Women in Dante's Commedia

updated:
Thursday, July 5, 2018 - 11:42am
NeMLA 2019, Washington DC
deadline for submissions:
Sunday, September 30, 2018

Free Will, defined by Dante's Virgilio as the noble power to guide and constrain the soul's natural inclination and desires (Purg 18.73),  holds a place of central concern in the Commedia. Elaborating on Marco Lombardo's discourse, the roman poet asserts that it is Free Will that accounts for the justice in feeling joy for doing good and misery for doing ill. While offering a general outline of the fundamental importance of Free Will in the ethical and moral rationale for the fate of departed souls, the pilgrim's first guide promises that Beatrice will provide clarity on this and other topics of particular complexity beyond the purview of his Classical pagan understanding.

The Stage and the Comics Page: Graphic Adaptations of Plays, Theatrical Adaptations of Comics

updated:
Thursday, September 20, 2018 - 10:54am
Northeast MLA 2019, March 21-24
deadline for submissions:
Monday, September 30, 2019

This panel seeks papers that explore adaptations from comics into theater, or from theater into comics. Whether comics adaptations of classic plays, or celebrated graphic narratives that get adapted for the musical stage, the interplay between the stage and the comics page is rich and multi-directional, as both are visual narratives, with very different points of access and methods of meaning-making. The ill-fated Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark may not have much in common with a graphic novelization of Oscar Wilde’s Salome, for instance, but they share an attempt to grapple with the intersection of the two media.
