This call for papers is a call to re/action.

Speaking on the evolution and significance of black aesthetics throughout film, music, and history, Arthur Jafa recognizes an explicitly reactive dimension in black cultural production, one predicated on the treatment or transformation of given materials. He demonstrates that black creativity and artistic expression in the United States has been elementally shaped by—and in reaction to—the parameters and circumstances of chattel slavery and its violent legacies.

Some forecast a post-capitalist, post-scarcity economy in which employment is a sought-after luxury good. In this world, individuals have a guaranteed basic income and can freely pursue liberal studies as part of a flourishing life.    Others foresee a significant expansion of machine learning resulting in a world where wealth becomes even more highly concentrated in the hands of the machines’ owners. In that world, most individuals will eke out a living in a gig economy making use of soft skills derived from their liberal arts education. Artificial intelligence, big data, robotics, and a threat of a pervasive algorithcracy, will have profound implications for the meaning and purposes of liberal studies.

The long Eighteenth Century is the time when ocular-centric thought established itself in Western society. Images and illustrations permeated textual spaces to the point that few books were printed without illustrations. From arts to sciences via fiction and geographic literature, the eighteenth-century citizen was therefore exposed to wide array of visual and textual combinations as part of his/her everyday life.

This one-day symposium will be held at Mount Royal University, Calgary, Canada on March 8, 2019.

For its 6th symposium, the Enlightenment Group welcomes 20-minute paper proposals engaging with:

-          Visual culture

-          Iconography
