“Fighting as we Build?”: Race, Resistance, Psychoanalysis

updated:
Wednesday, January 23, 2019 - 9:00am
American Studies Association Annual Meeting, 2019
deadline for submissions:
Saturday, January 26, 2019

This 2019 annual meeting theme, “build as we fight,” reminds us that revolutions necessarily entail a double investment, both in negating domination and exploitation and affirming alternative forms of life. The theme also leaves open the possibility that the relationship between what must be built and what must be fought might be one of conviviality or convergence, rather than clear-cut opposition.

CALL FOR PAPERS [Per]forming the Present: Studies in Narrative, Temporality, and Zeitgeist
Department of English Graduate Conference, Carleton University
26-29 April 2019

“Ours is essentially a tragic age, so we refuse to take it tragically. The cataclysm has happened, we are among the ruins, we start to build up new little habitats, to have new little hopes. It is rather hard work: there is now no smooth road into the future: but we go round, or scramble over the obstacles. We’ve got to live, no matter how many skies have fallen.”
D.H. Lawrence

Recent reports reveal that the U.S. has the highest rate of maternal deaths in the developed world, particularly among low-income, rural, and African American women (NPR, 2017). Changes to the Supreme Court endanger the viability of Roe v. Wade. In Iowa, a judge threatens to ban nearly all abortions once a fetal heartbeat can be detected (NPR, 2018). In Wisconsin, the state legislature rejects the repeal of the “cocaine mom law,” which opponents argue forces undue medical care on pregnant women (Reuters, 2017). These reproductive threats are not limited to only women’s rights.
