Fall 2019 Cormac McCarthy Conference

August 29 – September 1, 2019

Keynote speaker:  David Krakauer, President of the Santa Fe Institute

The Cormac McCarthy Society announces its next U.S. conference, to be held in Austin, Texas.  We’ll return to the downtown Hilton, the site of our conference in 2017, right in the midst of Austin’s funky restaurant and music scene.

This year’s keynote speaker will be David Krakauer, current President and William H. Miller Professor of Complex Systems at the Sante Fe Institute, where he has worked since 2002.  McCarthy is a Trustee at SFI, and the broadly interdisciplinary conversations he has there has informed his work in intriguing ways, most recently with his essay "The Kekulé Problem."

Call for Papers

The Cormac McCarthy Society invites submissions of one-page abstracts for papers to be presented on any aspect of Cormac McCarthy. We are especially interested in topics that explore McCarthy in relation to science and technology. Please send abstracts to the conference organizers at mccarthyconference2019@gmail.com by July 1, 2019.

Keynote Speaker

David Krakauer holds degrees in biology, computer science, and evolutionary theory, and his recent research is equally diverse, ranging from genetics to information theory.  He currently heads the Collective Computation group at the Sante Fe Institute, a group focused on “fundamental problems in evolutionary theory concerning collective behavior, collective computation, and collective intelligence—at all levels of biological organization—from societies of cells to societies of individuals to machine-human hybrid societies.”   In 2012, Krakauer was named by Wired magazine as one "50 people who will change the world.”
