Boston to Brazil: Elizabeth Bishop’s Geographies
Seeking papers/presenters for an approved session (#17976) at the 2020 NeMLA convention, Boston, March 5-8, 2020.
Chronicling a lifetime of relocations and drawing on an international array of forms as well as free verse, Elizabeth Bishop’s work poses titular “Questions of Travel.” This panel will explore the ways in which Bishop’s poetic travel guides and geographic primers dislocate as much as place her travelers and blur as much as map the boundaries that demarcate countries, species, cultures, and the self. Postcolonial, Queer Theory, Gender Studies, and Ecopoetics approaches to Bishop’s work along with studies focusing on Bishop’s Brazil-inspired writings and her acclaimed Geography III (1976), the last volume Bishop published in her lifetime, particularly suit this panel’s aims, but proposals on all aspects of Bishop’s work are welcome.
