CALL FOR PAPERS:

TRANSITIONS AND TRANSACTIONS V: TEACHING LITERATURE AMONG THE ARTS

We invite community college faculty to submit paper and panel proposals for the fifth Transitions and Transactions conference presented by the English Department at Borough of Manhattan Community College, CUNY on April 24-25, 2020. The Transitions and Transactions conference is dedicated to helping community college instructors flourish and excel as we envision, invent and expand our ideas of teaching given the demands of the community college population, the challenges and constraints specific to our profession, and the pressures of our particular historical moment.

At the 2020 Transitions and Transactions V conference, we will focus on “Teaching Literature Among the Arts,” raising critical questions and proposing creative ways of attending to aesthetic experience. With the defunding of arts and humanities, while aesthetic experience is the first casualty, it is also the topos for change, community building and political activism.  Foregrounding subjective experience, it stands as an antidote to the hegemonizing power of contemporary political discourse. Art allows for community to emerge. Our context calls on us to create new ways of engaging with our students critically and creatively in the historical moment we share with them.

The conference will address the questions and highlight the rewards particular to teaching literature among the arts at the community college level. We hope to create an environment where instructors share how they professionally, creatively and innovatively meet the challenges they face developing lessons for today’s diverse classrooms. How do the kindred arts enhance, expand, dialogue with, and partner with the teaching and study of literature?  How can teachers of literature use other art forms, and teachers in other art departments use literature, to augment the learning environment of the classroom?

We look forward to engaging in dialogue that will lead to the improvement and enrichment of the teaching and learning of literature and all the arts at the two-year college.
