As more and more women negotiate with postcolonial urban spaces today, the need to imaginatively tell their stories is compelling. Women are definitely affected in peculiar ways by the rapid and mostly unplanned urban expansionism in postcolonial nations. Therefore, the urban space is a site rich with stories of their lived experiences. With respect to its decentralized patriarchal focus, the postcolonial urban place could function as a place of liberation and creativity for women, yet it could be stifling and restrictive. The urban woman could be a middle-class career lady or a construction site worker, a leading actress or a door-to-door saleswoman. The possibilities are enormous as are the women’s concerns and experiences in the urban space.
The editors seek to publish a collection of short fiction from India and Africa imaginatively focusing on women and their experiences as they negotiate the urbanscape. This book is part of a project showcasing India-Africa relations.
