Drive: Combustion, Energy, Resilience

The Religion and Theatre Focus Group seeks proposals for individual papers and full panels that broaden the understanding of the relationship between performance and spiritual belief. We are especially interested in projects that engage with the ATHE 2020 conference theme, “Drive: Combustion, Energy, Resilience.” How do the drives that produce performance interact with the drives that produce devotion, activism, and resilience? How do those energies sometimes distort into frequencies of animosity, bigotry, or oppression? What are the ways in which performance explodes and rejuvenates spiritual belief, or vice versa? And what religious connections can be made between theatre and performance studies and the host city of Detroit?

Submission Deadlines:

Interested participants may apply in two ways:

  1. Submit an abstract (250-300 words) for individualpapersto Joseph D’Ambrosi at josephrdambrosi@gmail.comby October 20, 2019.
