20/20: Taking the Long View
56th Allerton English Articulation Conference
April 15-16, 2020
In cooperation with Northern Illinois University Continuing and Professional Education and the statewide Allerton Planning Committee, NIU’s Department of English is pleased to announce the 56th Allerton English Articulation Conference, to be held Wednesday and Thursday, April 15-16, 2020.
The Allerton English Articulation Conference, now in its twelfth year of NIU sponsorship, brings together faculty from two- and four-year colleges, universities, and high schools for discussions, presentations, networking, and co-mentoring, and takes place at the Allerton Park and Retreat Center in Monticello, Illinois. In keeping with tradition, our two-day format will include plenty of opportunities for collegiality, entertainment, and woodland walks.
This year’s theme, 20/20: Taking the Long View, invites us to articulate the strategies we employ as we sustain vision for our students and our profession. How do we help students persist and flourish in their educational journeys? How do we support each other in the short and long run? How do we not just endure, but thrive, through a class period, a semester, a career? Since our theme is suggestive, meant to invigorate rather than limit our discussions, proposals need not adhere strictly to our thematic invitation. As always, suggested proposal topics include but are not limited to composition, rhetoric, dual-credit courses, inclusion, English education, first-year experience, English language learning, film, literature, reading, developmental writing, varieties of assessment, college and career readiness, and writing across the curriculum.
Building upon the success of previous conferences at Allerton, we invite proposals for interactive individual and group presentations, as well as roundtable topics. In your proposal, be sure to explain how you plan to balance presentation with participation. Please email a title and one-paragraph abstract of your proposal to email@example.com by December 20, 2019. Those accepted will be notified by January 15, 2020.
We hope you'll join us for convivial, productive conversation as we celebrate our connections at Allerton House. We offer reduced registration rates for students and contingent faculty. Many of our first-time conference attendees have joined us because of a recommendation from a colleague; if you know of colleagues who might help us shape these discussions, we would be grateful if you would pass this invitation on to them.
We look forward to connecting with you at Allerton House in April!
