Call for Papers: American Association of Australasian Literary Studies Annual Conference

April 15–18, 2020

Albuquerque, New Mexico

The American Association of Australasian Literary Studies (AAALS) invites paper proposals for its 2020 annual conference. Papers addressing any aspect of the literature, film, and/or culture of Australia, Aotearoa/New Zealand, and other areas of Oceania are welcome. Papers on Aboriginal, Maori, or other indigenous topics are especially welcome, as we will be making connections to the local indigenous peoples. Proposals from current students are encouraged. Presentations are 20 minutes long; however, alternate presentation formats can be submitted.

The 2020 AAALS conference will take place on Wednesday, April 15, through Saturday, April 18, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Native American groups have inhabited the region for thousands of years, but Albuquerque was founded as a Spanish colony in 1706. Albuquerque now has a population of 500,000, and its modern downtown contrasts with Old Town, which is filled with historic adobe buildings, museums, and more. The conference will begin with a reception in the evening of Wednesday, April 15. On Thursday, April 16, there will be a full day of conference proceedings. Friday, April 17, is reserved for optional cultural excursions around the city and the region. The conference will conclude with a full day of proceedings on Saturday, April 18, followed by a conference dinner. Albuquerque is served by direct flights from more than 20 destinations across the United States, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, and New York.

Please send a paper title and 250-word proposal by 1 December 2019 to Brenda Machosky ( Please label the email subject line: AAALS 2020 proposal. If you do not label it this way, it could get lost. Submissions will be acknowledged within 48 hours and acceptances will be issued by mid-January.

For regular conference updates, see the AAALS website ( and the AAALS Facebook page (@AAALSinfo). Brenda Machosky is Vice President of AAALS and a Professor at University of Hawai`i West O`ahu.
