The 1920s is known as the “Roaring ’20s” because of the exuberant attitude of the time. Major social and cultural transitions were taking place. Women were gaining new political rights as well as rights to control their bodies and their futures. There was an explosion of African American music and arts in the Harlem Renaissance. The government attempted to maintain social order by limiting alcohol distribution through Prohibition, but ultimately failed and only increased the volume of crime. In the hundred years since the Roaring ’20s, there have been sweeping changes to the voices of modernity, but the same issues continue today--only the details have changed. Much like today, arguments about immigration, mass consumer culture, and traditional family values pervade national discussions. The role of women in society continues to evolve, the place and power of Africans Americans in American society still fills our headlines, and the government keeps renegotiating the status of intoxicating substances and their resulting crimes. So does this mean that in 2020 we are simply reentering the Roaring ’20s? Or will we develop some new expression for our modernity? What might scholars name this new era?
