Narrative Essays from Queer Mormons

updated:
Wednesday, January 15, 2020 - 3:47pm
QMW Project
deadline for submissions:
Saturday, February 15, 2020

For a lot of complicated reasons, the main queer Mormon stories people hear are those of cis gay men. We would like to make available the other stories.

We are seeking narrative essays from queer Mormons, no longer practicing Mormons, and Mormon-adjacent people. We are interested in the stories of queer women, trans and nonbinary people, intersex people, asexual people, and queer polyamorous women.

The four subject areas we are looking at are the following:

1) Identity

2) Relationships

3) Shame/Suicide/The Closet

Captivating Criminality 7 Conference: Crime Fiction: Memory, History and Revaluation July 2-4 Newton Park Campus, Bath Spa University

International Crime Fiction Association
deadline for submissions:
Saturday, February 15, 2020

The International Crime Fiction Association is delighted to announce its seventh conference, which will be held in Bath, UK. Building upon and developing ideas and themes from the previous six successful conferences, Memory, History and Revaluation, will examine the ways in which Crime Fiction as a genre necessarily incorporates elements of the past – the past in general and its own past, both in terms of its own generic developments and also in respect of true crime and historical events. The CfP will thus offer opportunities for delegates to engage in discussions that are relevant to both past and present crime writing.

Cinematic Representations of Women in Modern Celebrity Culture (1900-1950) (edited collection)

updated:
Wednesday, December 18, 2019 - 9:48am
Leticia Perez Alonso
deadline for submissions:
Friday, February 7, 2020

We invite proposals for contributions to an edited collection on cinematic representations of women in works of art, poetry, fiction, theater and criticism of the avant-garde. The popularization of film stars such as Blanche Sweet, Mae Marsh, Mary Pickford, Greta Garbo and Brigitte Helm shaped the cultural imaginary of modernity to such an extent that they influenced the creative activity of artists and writers in the years 1900-1950. Questions centering on feminine stardom will set the background of this collection of essays examining the intersections of vanguardism with popular culture, publicity and performance. How are images of femininity circulated and consumed by the spectators of the cinematic medium?

Located at the edge of Vancouver’s city limits, the University of British Columbia is perched on the edge of an ocean. Down an interminable set of winding stairs is Wreck Beach, and with a few more steps you are submerged in the saltwater of the sea. As a West Coast school, the possibility of submersion is always waiting at our door. What does this mean in a time of climate catastrophe and imminent sea level rise? How do we navigate relationships to the ocean, to submersion, and drowning in these chaotic times?  Submersion evokes the existence of multiple, nuanced truths and interpretations.
