Research on immigration to the United States from Austria after the Anschluss has focused exclusively on adults. Moreover, in contrast to the numerous publications and documentaries focusing on the Kindertransport to England before the outbreak of the war in September 1939, there has been limited attention given Austrian children and youth fleeing National Socialism and migrating to the United States. Despite the failure of the Wagner-Rogers Bill in 1939 to admit 20,000 refugee children, a limited number of children and youth immigrated to the United States, some with their parents, some alone, and some with other children. Consequently, their stories remain a largely untapped resource for scholars and this call seeks to address this lacunae.

In Comparative Literature, the increasingly contested field of “World Literature”, and Translation Studies, the notion of the “untranslatability” of literature has gained purchase in recent years, due in part to the work of Emily Apter and the continual rediscoveries of the work of Walter Benjamin. Literary translation is conceived of, in one view, as impossible, and in another view as an activity (even an art form) with infinite possibilities for the translator but minimal responsibilities toward that which is being translated.

On the Shoulders of Giants: TitanCon 2020

updated:
Tuesday, December 10, 2019 - 3:14pm
TitanCon
deadline for submissions:
Friday, February 15, 2019

In the spirit of deepening and broadening its roots, TitanCon 2020 is adding a formal academic track to its programming. The convention began as a collaboration between the Brotherhood Without Banners, who wanted to put on a fan convention for Game of Thrones, the Belfast SF/F society The Other Ones, who wanted to put on an SF/F convention, and Arkham Gaming Centre, who wanted to put on a gaming convention. In keeping with that spirit, our theme “On the Shoulders of Giants” hopes to encourage that spirit of collaboration.
