2020 Joint International Conference

 

The 2020 International Conference of the Pan-Korea English Teachers’ Association (PKETA), the New Korean Association of English Language and Literature (NKAELL), and the Korean Association of Language Sciences (KALS) will be held at Pusan National University, Busan, Korea. This year’s conference theme is “Nurturing English Education through Three Branches: Linguistics, Literature, Education” and we are planning to organize an informative conference with presentations on various topics. We accept presentations broadly related to the theme of the conference and expect your contribution to the conference.

Over the past two decades, queer, transgender, and sexuality studies have moved away from the medical model, turning away, as Regina Kunzel puts it, “from the clinic, the couch, and the psychiatric hospital to look instead at histories of sociality, of citizenship, community, culture, politics, the state.” In this special issue, however, we want to return to the sciences of sex, including and beyond the couch, to consider how the surveying and hierarchizing energies of “science” have been put toward the production of understandings of both sexual practice and binary sexual difference, in all of their gendered and racialized dimensions.

Two broadly anthropocene concerns—the ‘human’ condition along with the condition of this human planet, Earth—bear on all discursive practices central to contemporary areas of research in humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Both these concerns reconfigure ways in which humans have come to make sense of themselves and of the world which they share with other forms of life. The anthropocene—ramifications of Cartesian vision of human subject, the giver of meaning, that ultimately subdues all nature and co-existing life-forms—however is challenged by a posthuman turn in the latter half of 20th Century that trenchantly undercuts the foundations of humanism catapulting from the set boundaries established by the ideal of Enlightenment.

Often viewed as distinct in their approaches to collecting and creating data, the two fields rarely come together to combine methodologies and form what could be a powerful symbiosis of qualitative and quantitative research. For our 18th annual conference, the English Graduate Student Organization is especially interested in exploring the past, present, and future relationships between STEM and the humanities.

THE JOURNAL OF HISPANIC AND LUSOPHONE WHITENESS STUDIES (HLWS) is open access, peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal and is published annually. HLWS accepts submissions year-round on a rolling basis. The Journal promotes the research on non-Anglocentric Studies of Whiteness in the Lusophone, Hispanic (Iberian, Latin American, Caribbean, U.S. Latino/a, Afro-Hispanic Studies, including North African, the Western Saharan and Equatorial Guinean) cultural productions from any period.
