In Numbered Lives: Life and Death in Quantum Media, scholar and feminist digital humanities practitioner Jacqueline Wernimont examines recordkeeping technologies used to account for human lives and bodies, beginning as early as the 15th century. The book, in part a robust critical historiography, challenges us to interrogate and engage mindfully with contemporary data issues and methods, and with the ways in which they shape our narratives regarding the value of lives and cultures.

Call for book chapters - Non-canonical British literature: 1890-1945 - abstracts by 20 March, papers due 30 June 2020 We are working on an edited book on non-canonical English literature between 1890 and 1945 to be published by a UK publisher by the end of 2020. The provisional title of the book is Non-canonical British Literature: 1890-1945, and topics might include (but are not limited to):

- theoretical background of non-canonicity;

- studying individual non-canonical writers and their work(s);

- reasons for exclusion from the canon;

- shift from non-canonical to canonical;

- the role of power, ideology and religion in exclusion from the canon;

- conventionality and tradition;

- reception studies;

We are starting a national peer-reviewed undergraduate and graduate student journal, The Journal of Fantasy and Fan Cultures.  Our first issue is a special issue on Harry Potter and we are accepting academic essays and creative non-fiction submissions.

Submissions opened on February 1st and will be open until June 1st (extended deadline due to COVID19).    Submission is free. 

Submissions can focus on the Harry Potter books, films, other media, or any expressions of the fan cultures of Harry Potter, including fan fiction, art, sports, or fan communities of other kinds.

Let’s talk of thrones and let the games resume this fertile Beltrane (May Day, Friday, May 1, 2020), opening with a panel on Season 8 of A Game of Thrones, airing what went right and wrong with the HBO series, viewed by 31 million. Perhaps you want to craft a formal paper (20 minutes) or propose joining a panel (or bring your own team from campus); offer a lightning presentation (5 minutes) or experiment with a PechaKucha (20 slides, 20 second commentary each, in 6’40” total).

In the spirit of deepening and broadening its roots, Titancon 2020 is adding a formal academic track to its programming. The convention began as a collaboration between the Brotherhood Without Banners, who wanted to put on a fan convention for Game of Thrones, the Belfast SF/F society The Other Ones, who wanted to put on an SF/F convention, and Arkham Gaming Centre, who wanted to put on a gaming convention. In keeping with that spirit, our theme “On the Shoulders of Giants” hopes to encourage that spirit of collaboration.

The 14th Amendment stipulates that “all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” Yet the conferrence of the rights of U.S. citizenship to Indigenous peoples, descendants of enslaved Africans, nonwhite immigrants, and refugees has been repeatedly contested and warped by and in federal and state law. The full expression of national citizenship by nonwhite peoples in the U.S. South has been mutually shaped and conscripted by the experience and legacies of Jim Crow, indigenous removal, and anti-immigrant and refugee policies.
