CFP: RMMLA Chinese Lit and Film Since 1900 session

Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association 74th Annual Convention

Conference Date: October 7-10, 2020

Location: Millennium Harvest House Hotel, Boulder, Colorado, USA

We invite submissions of papers proposals that address a broadly defined theme of “change and resistance” in modern and contemporary Chinese literature, arts, film, and culture for the Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association (RMMLA) Annual Convention.

This session investigates how change and/or resistance to change are represented and might be the cause and consequence of different literary and artistic discourses from diverse perspectives. We are also interested in examining how power relationships define the changes in the literary, artistic, and cultural spheres of modern and contemporary Chinese cultures, and how new trends are included or excluded from the mainstream discourse.

Topics of interests include but are not limited to the following:

- Social and cultural changes in modern and contemporary China

- Remembrance, nostalgia, and amnesia in a time of change

- Humor, irony and understanding ironic messages in literature, arts, cinema, media, etc.

- The unspeakable, taboo, and prohibitions

- Sex, pornography, and eroticism

- Social exclusion and inclusion, social identity, power-dependence relations

- Feminist movements and gender studies

- Environment and eco-criticism

- Sci-fi and imagination of the future

- Rewriting history and the effects of attitudes on memory

Please submit your abstract along with a short biography to Yuhan Huang ( and Lavinia Benedetti ( by March 31, 2020. The language of the session is English and Chinese.
