Travels and Travelers of Necessity
What is the place of unwilling travel(er)s in travel studies? What are the costs of travel? This roundtable considers travels that are not undertaken strictly by choice. We welcome proposals from any field or period on topics such as: climate-related relocations, internal/political migrants, self-liberation from slavery or captivity, literal/figurative boundaries, eco/animal movements, borderlands/crossings, economic exigencies that require travel, narratives of new beginnings. Hoping to move beyond a binary of crisis/opportunity, we are eager for papers that examine travel and travelers in ways that engage with questions of identity--individual, national, political, social--and global movements, theorize community, or examine writers or travelers who themselves resist boundaries. This is a guaranteed session, sponsored by the MLA Travel Writing Forum. Please submit an abstract and short CV, or direct any queries, to Forum Chair Andrea Kaston Tange (firstname.lastname@example.org) by Friday March 20, 2020.
