October 8-10, 2020

Boulder, Colorado | Millennium Harvest House Hotel

English Nineteenth-Century Panel
Deadline Extended: April 30

The 2020 Convention of the Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association welcomes abstracts related to English Nineteenth-Century Literature. Ranging from the Regency to the Victorian era, the Nineteenth Century was an eclectic time facing significant social, political, and economic changes. Considering this period of change (and perhaps even how our own time is one of change) we invite abstracts dealing with, but not limited to topics such as:

  • Class difference and social critique
  • Empire, Colonialism, and Postcolonialism
  • Science, faith, and the formation of new knowledge
  • Imperial expansion and international relations
  • Racial tensions and representations
  • Social and gender roles and changes
  • Life in the wake of the American and French revolutions
  • Development and changes in genre, publication practices, and popular literature
  • Environmental concerns
  • Women writers
  • The Reform Bill and other political changes
  • Food, medicine, drugs, and addition
  • Crime, detection, and the development of the police force
  • Violence, abuse, and repression
  • Travel Writing and memoir
  • Archive work and Digital Humanities
  • The Romantic and the Gothic

All abstracts, whether fitting in one of these categories or not, will be considered. We invite abstracts from faculty members, graduate students, and independent scholars.

Please submit an abstract of 300 words and a brief bio to Michael Hatch, Arizona State University, at mphatch@asu.edu by April 30.
