Call for Papers: Monsters and the Monstrous in the Age of Trump (virtual session/roundtable)

The Northeast Alliance for Scholarship on the Fantastic and the Monsters & the Monstrous Area invite paper proposals for a special session/roundtable on “Monsters and the Monstrous in the Age of Trump” for the 2020 conference of the Northeast Popular Culture/American Culture Association (NEPCA) to convene at Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester, New Hampshire, from Friday, 23 October, to Saturday, October 24.

The deadline for proposals is June 30, 2020.

Please note: This year’s conference will be entirely virtual.

Monsters and the Monstrous in the Age of Trump

There is no question that over his time as a public figure Donald J. Trump has had a profound impact on the United States, the world at large, and popular culture, both at home and abroad. This is especially true for the first two decades of the twenty-first century. From his role on the Apprentice to his opposition to Barack Obama to his presidential campaign, subsequent victory, and now four-year tenure as president, Trump has changed the world dramatically. Most significantly, he has altered our conception of monsters and the monstrous, a fact we’d like to contemplate and address in this special session as we move towards Election Day yet again.

While we may differ on our sentiments toward Trump (whether celebrating or vilifying him), a conversation on his effect within and around the fantastic is worth having in light of all he has done and continues to do.

We hope to achieve a balanced perspective in this session. Proposals will be evaluated on the merit of the ideas and potential as fuller works of scholarship to be presented at the conference.

Possible topics:

  • Trump as monster/monstrous figure
  • Monsters/monstrous things created by Trump (and/or his supporters)
  • Monsters/monstrous things forgotten and/or ignored by Trump (and/or his supporters)
  • Monsters/monstrous things found by Trump (and/or his supporters)
  • Monsters/monstrous things conceived in response to Trump (and/or his supporters)

Please submit your proposal to the Monsters & the Monstrous Area via the online form at https://forms.gle/TTbp6EVTkYJqcGgM6.
