For centuries Italy and East Asia have been at the center of numerous economic, political, and cultural exchanges. Studies have mostly focused on the relationship between Italy and China. As Zhang (2018) points out, in the last decade this topic has piqued the interest of a number of scholars on Italy-China issues. In addition to the special issues of the Journal of Modern Italian Studies (2010) and in the Journal of Italian Cinema and Media Studies (2014), books have been published on Italian-Chinese relations such as Marinelli and Andornino (2013) and Chinese migration to Italy (Pedone 2013).

We would like to expand on other Asia realities by asking the following questions: What are the connections between Italy and East Asia? What is at stake in the relationships between Italy and the Far East? What exchanges occur between Italy and East Asia? In what ways do these exchanges are similar or different from the relationship between Italy and China?

The goal of this panel is to open a dialogue among scholars both in the humanities and social sciences in the field of Italy-East Asia relationship, in order to create a pilot initiative among scholars of the field for the long term project. We welcome papers that address this issue(s) from a number of different angles, including (but not limited to): Anthropology, Cinema Studies, Cultural studies, Literary studies, Media studies, Medical humanities, Medieval studies, Migration Studies, Musicology, Philosophy, Religious studies, Sociology, Spatiality, Translation studies, Women, Gender and Sexuality studies.

Please submit your abstract of 200 words and a brief biography to the panel organizers by September 30, 2020 (please send to both of us): Hiromi Kaneda ( and Giuseppe Grispino (
