Secondary Survivors of Sexual Abuse and Assault
Secondary survivors are people who are close to the survivor and may experience some of the same side effects such as navigating personality changes, depression and emotions related to the trauma. This book is written with secondary survivors (SS) in mind. Part scientific research, part practical guide, part autobiography, editors are seeking academic papers written entirely for the layman or laywoman who is a secondary survivor. The writing should be very accessible. In addition, we are also interested in personal narratives that include tested OR proven ideas documenting how to handle or manage a situation when faced with a survivor and / or the prospect of being a secondary survivor. The collection aims to support the traditional reader who has been confronted with the reality of a trauma such as sexual assault and or sexual abuse to understand and navigate that new reality. Although the actual survivors’ story may be a first-person account or be considered significant, the secondary survivors are in immediate proximity to the trauma and must deal with their own pasts, demons, insecurities, helplessness, anger, and sometimes even betrayal. Since most of the literature focuses on the experience of the trauma survivors (as it is appropriate), secondary survivors often feel guilty for finding themselves confronted with similar feelings and hardships, and find that they have little support for processing their experience. Often there is no affordable therapy, no group, no one who is able to guide the Secondary Survivor through the myriad of confusing feelings and the steps of healing. This book aims to provide unique support to this special group. With chapters that provide scientific research, practical guidance, and some autobiography, this book offers an approachable starting point for more thorough research and further help. I invite abstracts of personal stories of SS, academic papers dealing with SS, and everything else related to the topic. Editors will be conferring with a psychologist to ensure that this collection will be as grounded and practical as can be.
