We are delighted to announce that we are now accepting abstracts for this year’s Literary and Visual Landscapes symposium which will be held online on Wednesday 9th June 2021 on the theme of (Re)imagined Landscapes.

An event jointly hosted by the Centre for Environmental Humanities, our symposium welcomes a wide range of interpretations on this important theme and will include both the conventionally imagined landscape as an urban, physical, natural, geographical or pastoral space, but also landscapes that have been both physically and abstractly reimagined, and landscapes of a more virtual nature.

We hope to attract a wide diversity of both academics and non-academics to the interdisciplinary discussion, and inspire a range of original approaches. Possible ideas for 20-minute papers include, but are not limited to:

  • Imaginary landscapes (in literature, games, film, etc.)

  • Constructing virtual landscapes: GIS and mapping

  • The use of VR in landscape research

  • Methodologies for researching landscapes remotely

  • Anthropocene landscapes

  • Sensescapes (e.g. soundscapes and smellscapes)

  • (Re)constructing borders

  • Changing uses of landscapes (e.g. post-industrial spaces, heritage sites)

Speakers are invited to submit abstracts (200 words max) with a short biography (c. 100 words) to literarylandscapes1@gmail.com by Monday 15th February 2021.
