CALL FOR PAPERS, ABSTRACTS, AND PANEL PROPOSALS IN CLASS STUDIES

Midwest Popular Culture Association/Midwest American Culture Association Annual Conference 2021

We are excited to announce the addition of a new panel on class studies for this year’s conference.

Class and culture are intrinsically tied together but are sometimes left out of academic fields of study. Identity, including religion, race, gender, and class can shape the way we see the world and the way the world sees us. Throughout the history of the United States, including the last several years and especially during the Covid pandemic, class dictates the ways in which we see the same events differently. Whether we witness quarantine safely from home offices or from underpaid factories under dangerous conditions, class is always at the core of our culture. While we have seen the struggle of families try and survive without income or WiFi for homeschooling children, we have also seen record breaking sales at high end ski resorts. The time is always right to have class studies in our academic discussions and research, and especially now as we move into a decade facing uncertainty for many and a widening class division.

Topics may include, but are not limited to:

o Class representation in the political sphere

o Class issues during quarantine

o Class struggles in America

o Class politics during protest

o Class and the digital divide
