Output in the Interstice: Performance and Product in Times of Hiatus

A Virtual Symposium, May 22, 2021

The University at Buffalo Theatre and Dance Graduate Student Association welcomes proposals for papers and performances from scholars and artists from all disciplines and methodologies who engage with performance as a practice and/or as a means of knowing.

This virtual symposium addresses issues of “output” during times of pause in the creative process or any processes yielding product through labor. This consideration of interval or interruption need not pertain specifically to the current pandemic, but can extend into reflections of larger historical, cultural, or political pauses or hiatus, as well as the way these temporal alterations affect our everyday lives.

In recognition of both the difficulties of production during a pandemic and of Zoom attentiveness thresholds, the organizers particularly seek: Micro-papers/performances, works-in-progress, and hybrid presentations.

Topics may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Liveness, Reproduction, & Digital Theatre

• Burnout, Hyper-Productivity, & Worth

• New Modes of Collaboration & Research

• Theatre of Disease & Illness

• Reckoning, Reflecting & Rebuilding: Confronting Anti-Blackness during Hiatus

• Shifting/Reorganizing Efforts to Create Work During COVID-19 & Beyond

• Emerging Technologies

• Imperfect Connections

• Virtual Pedagogy

• Duration, Attention

• Anxiety, Isolation, and Mental Health

• Empty Spaces, Sparse Use, & Darkness
