Virtual (online) panel:

City Spaces and Beyond in French and Francophone Cinema

This virtual (online) panel welcomes papers exploring the presence and role of cities in French and Francophone cinema.

Questions we may ask are:

Does cinema use the city as décor, background, negative space, or does it redefine our knowledge and relationship with it? Which hermeneutics, which ways of knowing the city do films foreground? Which opportunities, dreams and challenges are projected onto the city space? What role does the city play in stories about quests, growth, or failure? Which types of stories are generated in/by urban spaces? Do stories about non-urban spaces use the city as a foil? What role(s) do regional cities play in French and Francophone cinema?

Papers in French or English are welcome.

For questions concerning the panel, please contact Marion Geiger, California State University San Marcos, at
