Avar: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Life and Society in the Ancient Near East

CFP Close: 12/15/21

Topic: Parenthood in the Ancient Near East

Submissions: https://journals.tplondon.com/avar/submissionprepchecklist

Avar 2.1 is now requesting submissions for a special issue dedicated to the topic of “Parenthood in the Ancient Near East.” We seek articles with interdisciplinary approaches that explicitly adopt, adapt, or integrate theories and methodologies from within the traditional fields of ancient Near Eastern studies (i.e., archaeology, Assyriology, biblical studies, Egyptology, Hittitology, etc.), as well as from socio-anthropological and scientific disciplines focused on the topic of parenthood.

Parenting is a broad category, and we welcome proposals that think creatively about parenting and take interdisciplinary approaches to topics surrounding parenting such as:

● Motherhood (the social or biological role of mothers in a given society)

● Fatherhood (the social or biological role of fathers in a given society)

● Non-traditional parenting (grand-parenting, adoptive parents, surrogate parents, etc.)

● Parenting multiple kinds of children (children who are young, grown, and of differing abilities)

● Parenting and the law

● Lack of parenting (children without parents or adults without children)

● Social status and parenting (what did parenting look like for parents of varying social statues)

● Biological complications of parenting (e.g. drawing upon the archeological record)

Avar accepts submissions in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. Submissions may take the form of short notes (2,000-4,000 words) and articles (6,000-12,000 words). Word counts include notes and references.

Submissions will only be accepted through the submission platform.
