col- is a new journal that investigates collaborative practice through a wide range of critical and creative forms. For its inaugural issue, the editors are seeking writing and art that asks: what does it mean to make and think together?

Study, we know from the work of Fred Moten and Stefano Harney, is never singular. Works like After Lorca by Jack Spicer and Zong! by M. NourBeSe Philip and Setaey Adamu Boateng demonstrate that collaboration need not only occur between two or more people in the same time and place. Further, collaboration might take place across different media and languages: Translations with collages by Jess Collins and poetry by Robert Duncan, Rosa Alcalá’s translations with Cecilia Vicuña, and the sound works of Susan Howe and David Grubbs each exemplify the potential of collaborative practice to cross-cut and expand the field of making.

We invite those who are interested in collaboration to contribute works such as:

— Scholarship or criticism that explores collaboration in literature, philosophy, or the visual and performing arts (no more than 40 pages)

— Reviews of recent collaborative projects (no more than 5 pages)

— Poetry (no more than 15 pages)

— Prose, lyric essays, creative nonfiction (no more than 15 pages)

— New media projects (no more than 5 pieces)

— Visual art (no more than 5 pieces)

— Manifestos and other documents related to collective movements (no more than 15 pages)

We hope that collaboration is a generative starting point for broader considerations of aesthetic and theoretical practice today. We welcome work from writers and makers at any stage in their career. Final submissions or queries should be emailed to coleditors@gmail.com. We will accept submissions until the end of May 2021 and respond to submissions in June 2021. No abstract is required for submission. We’re looking forward to reviewing your work.
